I thought I’d start a semi-regular feature where I’ll write about the music that’s currently occupying valuable space on my iPod. I’m by no means a music critique, I just consume a shit load of it and I’m always looking for new tunes to share with the world. One thing you need to know about me is that I love almost every kind of music out there so expect very diverse styles.
DJ Hero Soundtrack
Even though DJ Hero didn’t encrust itself into popular culture (yet!) like Guitar Hero and Rock Band did, it did get mostly favorable reviews and you have to give Activision credit for trying something new, and given David Guetta’s leak that he’s on DJ Hero 2 we have to assume things are going pretty well. Although I loved the previous iterations of the Hero franchise I still haven’t gotten the chance to try out DJ Hero. I would have to say because its controller is a lot more intimidating than the Rock Band’s of this world but I digress. What’s really caught my attention is the insane amount of music that’s on this game. A DJ friend who tried the game over the holidays was impressed and recommended the soundtrack to me. The 88 track soundtrack features a who’s who of current and past chart topping hits with the likes of Daft Punk, The Beastie Boy, Kid Cudi, Common, 2Pac, Queen, David Bowie, Young MC, Tiesto, 88 Keys and the list goes on, you can check out a full list of the songs and artists here, I’m quite impressed by the mash up of Foreigner’s Juke Box Hero vs. DJ Hero. If your a fan of mash ups and new mixes or your looking for really original tunes to impress the less informed out there and liven up your house party you owe it to yourself to pick this one up…oh wait Activision didn’t release an actual soundtrack… smart. I guess you’ll have have to buy the game or figure out another way to get this amazing compilation.
Slipnot // Snuff
Slipknot‘s single “Snuff” is probably the last thing anybody would have expected from atl-metal/neo-shock super group. The introspective single breaks the mold that the band has created for itself over its 10 year lifespan. Although I’ve known of their music it was never something that clicked with me so when I heard the Snuff for the first time I had a hard time believing that what I was listening too. The single if off their 2008 release “All Hope Is Gone” CD and has been burning up the charts since its release.
Also, on December 18th the band created a visual for “Snuff” and unveiled this amazing short film/video co-directed by Slipknot’s own M. Shawn Crahan and renowned photographer/director P.R. Brown. The film features frontman Corey Taylor and the amazing Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).
Paper Tougues // Ride To California
The first time I heard Paper Tongues’ single “Ride To California” I asked myself who is this? I was really impressed with the signers voice and loved the melody. I have a weakness for bands that blend rock n’roll melodies with hip hop beats. I was hungry for more but I’ll have to wait since the band has only one other single (Trinity) on iTunes. The Charlotte band has yet to release their softmore album and I haven’t been able to find a release date, they are however currently on tour. The bands bio reveals the incredibly wide variety of influences which always impresses me. Paper Tongues is on my must get list and I’ll let you know once more news is out. Make sure you check out the official video below or the embed player and if you like what you hear you can download Ride To California free off the official site.
